Birdwings

Birdwings, the Gold Coast’s first Forest School, is all about living the most natural childhood possible in this busy world. Our forest school programs take children out of their busy schedules and give them time to play with friends in nature. There’s no rush, no schedules, no screens. We have time to think and dream and talk about the things that interest us. We have time to PLAY! Nature becomes children’s happy place.

There’s plenty of time for children to explore their own learning, supported by experienced nature mentors who believe that children are capable learners. We understand that children crave the simplicity and openness of the time and space that nature provides.

We understand that all children crave connection to community, to culture and to country, and this sense of belonging is at the heart of our business. Our programs operate across Kombumerri and Wangerriburra Country (Gold Coast Hinterland) and we honour these connections through language, story, stewardship of the land and active community connections. We acknowledge the process of Reconciliation is an ongoing and deeply important journey for all Australians.

Forest School is both a philosophical approach and a grounded connection to place. Being outside in wild nature integrates children’s health and well being, developmental growth, and educational learning. Birdwings Forest School have been recognised for our innovative outdoor programs as finalists in the Education category for the QORF Outdoors Qld Awards in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Our philosophy

We believe:

  • Children are influenced by their environment
  • Children learn best in an environment that is safe, supportive, attractive and stimulating
  • Children learn best when they know they are liked and accepted
  • Every child is unique, each with their own special abilities, needs, interests and prior experiences
  • Every child should be allowed to learn at a pace and in a way that is best for that individual
  • Providing a program for individuals requires consultation between family and staff and other professionals where necessary
  • Providing a program for individuals is a continuous process that involves observing, recording and analysing children’s behaviour and interests and planning, implementing, evaluating and planning further
  • It is vital to consider the whole child and see all aspects of a child’ s development (physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language) as being important and interrelated
  • Young children learn by doing, using concrete materials
  • Young children learn best from experiences that are relevant and meaningful to them
  • Young children require a play-based approach to learning
  • Children learn best when they have high self-esteem and confidence in themselves and their abilities
  • The family is the first and most important influence in a child’s life, and this special relationship should be valued and promoted
  • Confidentiality should be maintained with regards to information concerning children and families
  • Every person, whether adult or child, should be treated warmly and with respect, and should not be denied information or opportunities because of race, culture, gender, lifestyle or individual ability
  • Children learn by imitating others and require good role models
  • Children learn best from a program that is both age appropriate and individually appropriate.

Our Service is located on the CQ University Campus, North Rockhampton. We have an open door policy and you are welcome to join your child during the course of the day if you have time available.

Natural Outdoor Environments

The service provides large natural outdoor environments where children can use the digging patch, stage and the timber cabin/cubby for their science and enquiry or imaginative play. The digging patch is a muddy area when wet and the children use this space for all different kinds of play experiences. There is a lot of natural shade in the outdoor environments allowing the children to play in a cool shaded space. There is scope for the children to use their imagination in the outdoor areas as the gardens provide the children with access to a range of different experiences. Children naturally move in an environment that is constantly changing from minute to minute and from season to season. These changes create an exciting place to play. Light changes, casting shadows and patterns of coloured light; the wind moves objects both fixed and free creating interest and intrigue.

Community spirit is important to us at C&K nGundanoo Imbabee Child Care. Rainbow Valley ELC

Rainbow Valley is a special place, where children are supported on a pathway of natural learning.  We see children as rich in potential who are competent investigators of the world, who deserve quality environments and relationships that are supportive to the whole family. As the African proverb states, “It takes a village to raise  a child”. Welcome to our village!

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Rainbow Valley’s Philosophy is built on evidence-based practice.  A philosophy is important in early childhood settings as it outlines the beliefs and understandings of all stakeholders. This helps us to define and guide our programs and practices. It helps to guide our pedagogy and support our understandings of our curriculum implementation.

Our philosophy is built upon 6 core values:

Respect – Compassion – Joy – Democracy – Responsibility – Trust

These values combine to directly lead into 6 philosophical statements which underpin our vision for our service and guide our ongoing reflection of our practices:

  • We believe that children are independent, unique inquisitive and competent individuals who deserve quality experiences each day.
  • Create Environments that are rich, full of quality materials and opportunities for investigation.   We want children to be responsible, make choices, and plan for and engage in play that interests them. We will endeavour to, create spaces that support children’s Responsibility and connectedness to nature, encouraging them to find joy, wonder and beauty in the world and in making new discoveries.  Providing spaces that enrich children’s physical, personal, social, emotional spiritual and cognitive opportunities for learning.
  • Learn through programs that support their play and their attempts to make meaning from the world. We see children and teachers as researchers, striving to investigate the world around them. They are making connections and theories about how things work and how trying to represent this thinking through play, art, music, drama and symbol making. We will endeavour to create educational opportunities that support children’s opportunities to be connected to the world and to experience, joy, and wonder in learning. Work democratically with children, collaboratively, building agency, making connections to and about their world, encouraging them to expand their own theories and understanding of how the world works. Create opportunities to learn about nature, culture and our community as well as understandings of themselves.
  • Have their thinking visible and respected through documentation. This explains what the children are doing and learning. We support children/ parents to take part in recording the process by making contributions, sharing and reading the learning journeys that children are making. We will endeavour to create collaborative documentation processes that encourage all partners responsible for children’s education, (educators, children, and families) an opportunity to contribute, reflect plan and construct learning. Making this process visible through multiple modes enables all to see and reflect on the child in relation to their journey.
  • Be viewed as competent people, who have their own identity and needs, with the right to their own pathway of learning. We want children to achieve to their own potential and be celebrated for who they are as individuals. We will endeavour to reflect on personal bias which may impinge on developing our own cultural competence and understandings of others. Be inclusive in building relationships with respect, trust, and compassion that supports the individual cultural identity for each family. Support children’s right to be included with equity and dignity in our programs. Celebrate the diverse culture within our community and foster pride in children’s developing understandings of Being Australia. Promote understandings of indigenous culture and be respectful as the first custodians of our land.

OUR INFLUENCES

Rainbow Valley offers innovative play-based curriculum that is guided by the EYLF, as well as supporting an approach based on long term projects which are informed by international perspectives. The educators at Rainbow Valley have been researching high quality evidence based best practice since opening the service. This has resulted in connecting with many theorists that support rich learning for children.  One of our major influences is the educational research project in Reggio Emilia.  The principles of Reggio Emilia can be considered as having an image of children who are capable people, full of potential, competence and rights. Who learn within a relationship with educators. Make connections and construct understandings of deep concepts through using the arts.  Connect to learning through shared documentation.  The importance of the physical environment as a protagonist for learning.  View children and educators researching and learning about the world together.  We have specific art studios in each section of the service where we organise regular visits with artists in our community, as well as employing an additional artist educator to support the curriculum of the kindergarten.

The Abecedarian approach created by Joseph Sparling in Canada supports the development of literacy and Numeracy across the whole service.  It is a suite of teaching and learning strategies that were developed to increase children’s shared attunement with their educator, increase language and conceptual development, emphasis the importance of interactions as a way to embed  learning across the whole day.  It has 4 core components, these being Language Priority, Conversations reading, Enriched Caregiving and Learning games.

We also connect to the vision of Nature Pedagogy where the influences of Clair Warden from Scotland has served to enrich our thinking in regard to the importance of children’s need for Natural play spaces.   This thinking encourages us to engage children in long experiences in outside environments where children have control to shape the environment.  Explore natural elements.  Connect to sustainability and awareness of human impact on the environment and supports a connection to the land and place that respects our first Australians.
